Avalanche survive feisty game against the Kraken with a 5-3 win | 5 takeaways

This train keeps on rolling.

The Colorado Avalanche completed their first third-period comeback of the season on Tuesday night, scoring three goals in the final 20 minutes to beat the Seattle Kraken 5-3. Of course, you can’t come back if you aren’t trailing, and the Avalanche haven’t trailed much this year.

Here are five takeaways from another road win.

  1. It will be fascinating to see how long Ross Colton stays at center. Jared Bednar liked him during his first game but it’s been a bit of a tough go in the following two games. That line spent the majority of their time in the defensive zone and when they did get in the offensive zone, not much was created. A pass from Victor Olofsson over Colton’s stick is what started the rush for Seattle’s second goal.
  2. A lot of praise for Artturi Lehkonen during the intermission on the TNT broadcast, as they tried to call him the most underrated player in the game. Rick Bowness, the former coach of the Winnipeg Jets, had to chime in. “I can tell you he’s not underrated by the coaches around the league. We see all those things (he does) and we love it,” Bowness said.
  3. There’s a lot of chaos to Josh Manson’s game, and against the Kraken, you saw a bit of everything. He threw a huge hit on Mason Marchment early in the first, then made a fantastic play on the opening goal by Lehkonen on the zone entry. In the third, he delivered some monster punches to Marchment’s face, something he’s probably been waiting seven months to do, and then a few minutes later put his glove on the puck, giving the Kraken a penalty shot. You don’t always know what you’re going to get, but it’s sure entertaining.
  4. When the Avalanche really needed a power-play goal, they came through with one. It wasn’t like the power play was bad in this game, as they hit multiple posts, but they needed to find the back of the net to help this team secure the win. That’s exactly what Brock Nelson did 9 seconds into Colorado’s final man advantage, and it proved to be the game winner. That’s three straight road games with a power-play goal.
  5. This was a feisty game. You don’t usually see that in the middle of December, especially when the two teams haven’t played each other yet this season. When Nathan MacKinnon is throwing hits at center ice, you know it’s chippy. MacKinnon briefly lost his scoring lead in the NHL to Connor McDavid, but a three-point third period returned that lead to the Colorado star.
