Broncos prepare for another ‘playoff game’ with surging Jaguars coming to Denver

ENGLEWOOD – Another week, another playoff game.

At least that’s the word from the Broncos.

The Broncos (12-2) dubbed it like a playoff game when they defeated Green Bay 34-26 at home last Sunday to take another step toward winning the AFC West and having the No. 1 playoff seed in the AFC. Now, with a win Sunday at Empower Field over Jacksonville (10-4), they could put a stranglehold on those goals.

“This is a playoff game for us and for them, too,’’ defensive lineman Zach Allen said after Wednesday’s practice at Broncos Park. “So they’re a heck of a team.”

The game isn’t getting the national billing of the one against the Packers, which was shown on CBS to much of the nation. Instead, it will be available over the air starting at 2:05 p.m. in very limited areas of the country on Fox. But you better believe it’s a big game.

If the Broncos win, they would clinch the AFC West if the Los Angeles Chargers (10-4) lose or tie Sunday at Dallas. And there are ways with a win that Denver could clinch the top AFC seed as soon as Sunday.

A win by the Jaguars, who lead the AFC South, and they would remain in contention for the No. 1 seed. And a Denver loss coupled by a Chargers win could lead to a Week 18 game at Empower Field between the Broncos and Chargers with the division title on the line.

“I could definitely attest to that,’’ Broncos cornerback Pat Surtain II said about Sunday’s matchup being like a playoff game. “They’re a conference opponent, so it seems like a lot is at stake so early. … It definitely feels like that type of (playoff) atmosphere for sure.”

The Broncos have won 11 straight and a victory Sunday would give them their longest single-season winning streak since starting 13-0 in 1998. That team had a streak of 18 straight when one includes Denver winning the 1997 regular-season finale and then four playoff games, including Super Bowl XXXII. The longest overall regular-season winning streak in Broncos history remains the 2012 and 2013 teams having 17 in a row.

The Jaguars quietly have emerged as one of the top teams in the AFC. After a 5-4 start, they have won five straight while averaging 34.2 points, which Surtain called “crazy stats.”

Quarterback Trevor Lawrence has thrown for 3,217 yards and 23 touchdowns this season, including over the past three games having nine TD passes and no interceptions. He was named AFC offensive player of the week Wednesday for throwing for 330 yards and five touchdowns and rushing for a TD in Sunday’s 48-20 win over the New York Jets

“He’s got all the talent both with his legs running and throwing,’’ Allen said. “He’s got really good players. They’re doing a heck of a job. Credit (Jaguars coach) Liam (Coen) with what they’re dialing up right now.”

While Allen and the Broncos’ defense must defend against Lawrence, the guy who likely knows the most about him is on Denver’s offense. Tight end Evan Engram spent the past three seasons with the Jaguars, catching the bulk of his 234 passes from Lawrence, who has had his share of ups and downs since being the NFL’s top draft pick in 2021.

“He’s got a great staff around him,’’ Engram said. “He looks comfortable. I’ve seen him make those plays and to see him do it a lot more consistently now, he looks super confident, looks super comfortable.”

Engram downplayed going against his former team, calling it “a nice little reunion.” But he did dub it a “big game.” Engram said he will provide pointers to Denver’s defense about the Jaguars but declined to say what that might entail.

Offensive weapons helping Lawrence include running back Travis Etienne, who has gained 949 yards, and wide receiver Jakobi Meyers, who has caught 27 passes for 355 yards in six games since being acquired from Las Vegas.

Denver will face the Jaguars without starting safety Brandon Jones, who was placed on injured reserve Monday with a pectoral injury. But head coach Sean Payton said “that depth” the Broncos have with P.J. Locke replacing Jones helps a lot. Locke was a regular starter last season.

The Jaguars went 4-13 last season and coach Doug Peterson was fired. But Engram insisted he’s not surprised at their turnaround.

“Last year, we had a tough year but it came down to the end of every game,’’ he said. “We dropped a bunch of one-score games last year that could have gone either way.”

Engram said “our work is cut out for us” against Jacksonville’s defense. Payton agreed.

“The one thing that stands out, they’re plus-10 in the turnover ratio,’’ Payton said. “They’re second in the league in interceptions.”

Among Jacksonville’s 18 interceptions, linebacker Devin Lloyd has five, including one returned 99 yards for a touchdown. Payton said “there are some weeks we play corners that can’t catch” and that the Broncos can then be more daring. But he said Jacksonville cornerbacks “have really good ball skills.” Cornerbacks Montaric Brown and Jourdan Lewis each have two picks.

Broncos quarterback Bo Nix said the Jaguars have “just a really good defense.” He agreed Sunday will be like a playoff game.

“It feels like each game is a playoff game and each game has a lot of importance to it,’’ Nix said.

After facing the Jaguars, Denver plays Kansas City on Christmas night before taking on the Chargers. If the Broncos keep winning, the regular-season finale definitely won’t feel like a playoff game.

Mark Kiszla: 'It's our turn to bring a parade to the city!' declares Broncos star Courtland Sutton

Don’t tell anybody. But the Broncos have a bad case of trophy envy. And that’s a good thing. The Colorado Avalanche hoisted the Stanley Cup in 2022. Nikola Jokic and the Denver Nuggets went on parade with the Larry O’Brien Trophy in 2023. And now? “It’s our turn to bring a parade to the city,” […]
