Aurora raises rec center, history museum fees as city faces budget shortfall

Aurora is raising recreation center fees and adding a fee for visiting the Aurora History Museum starting next year as a budget deficit looms, according to the city’s newsletter.

The Aurora History Museum, which is currently free, will start charging $5 for adults and $1 for children on Jan. 6. The museum will also adjust its hours, open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays, and from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturdays.

There will also be an opportunity to buy memberships for $25 for individuals, $50 for families and $100 for organizations, according to the museum’s webpage.

More information on price changes and memberships can be found on Aurora’s website.

As the city faces a budget shortfall in the coming year, the addition of a fee for the museum will help city staff “sustain high-quality, professional and award-winning exhibitions and educational programs,” the newsletter said.

Starting on Jan. 1, the city’s recreation fees will also increase by 10%, according to the newsletter. The increase applies to all recreation-related fees, including rentals, memberships, drop ins and programming.

Annual memberships for residents will cost $149 for youth, $375 for adults and $196 for adults over 62. Drop-in fees will cost $5 for youth, $7 for adults and $5 for older adults.

More pricing information is available on the city’s website.

“This adjustment reflects the city’s commitment to providing top-tier facilities, services and programs for all residents as it continues to be challenged by increasing costs associated with operations and maintenance, administrative support services, renovations and capital improvements,” the city newsletter said.

Scholarships are available for residents who qualify, and more information is available on the city’s website.
