Colorado mountain town opens pond for ice skating, including under lights

An ice skating tradition has returned to Colorado’s mountains.

Skaters have been invited back to Meadow Creek Pond, the frozen body of water at the park behind the Walmart in Frisco. The town recently announced opening the site and starting maintenance that is anticipated every year by locals and visitors.

Compared with rinks and other ice skating venues around Summit County’s ski resorts, the free Meadow Creek Pond affords a natural environment and a unique opportunity at night. The ice opens at 8 a.m. and is lit from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m.

Frisco’s Public Works Department also clears snow from the pond and has sprayed water over the ice to improve the surface. “No fishing” signs are posted, “as auger holes and the related conditions caused by ice fishing create an unsafe and un-fun ice skating surface,” according to a town news release.

Signs are also posted on the north and south ends of the pond, marking “thin ice” around the inflow and outflow areas. And while the ice is regularly measured for safe and sturdy depths, “skaters are always advised that they are skating at their own risk,” the town news release states.

Visitors must bring their own skates, with no rentals on site.
