Littleton man sentenced after knife attack on officer
A Douglas County man will spend more than a decade in prison after attacking a police officer with a knife.
A Douglas County District judge sentenced 31-year-old Corbin Klein to 12 years in prison Tuesday on charges of first-degree assault on a peace officer with a deadly weapon, according to a news release from the 23rd Judicial District Attorney’s Office.
Klein was arrested on June 6, 2024, at the King Soopers on Red Cedar Drive after “a disturbing series of incidents,” according to a previous news release by the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office.
First, Klein entered the King Soopers on Wildcat Reserve Parkway and vandalized an LGBTQ+ Pride display by popping several balloons with a knife. After leaving, Klein returned to the store and stole the display, officials said.
Deputies later found him at a second King Soopers, attempting to take more pride balloons. When confronted, Klein advanced toward deputies with a knife.
Officers immediately subdued and apprehended Klein without injuries.
A Douglas County jury found Klein guilty of assault after a trial in October.
Testimonies showed that Klein’s father contacted law enforcement the day before the incident, reporting concerns that his son was suicidal. Klein had allegedly made threats to harm immigrants and himself, the district attorney’s office said.
Klein claimed he had been experiencing a mental health episode after he was laid off from work and his dog died.
“This case — involving yet another out-of-towner who came here to commit crimes — highlights three important facts about law enforcement in our community: they face unpredictable and potentially lethal situations every day, they are the best trained officers in the state, and if you try to hurt them, we will take away your freedom… Lots of it,” District Attorney George Brauchler said in the release.
