Man arrested on suspicion of DUI after fatal car crash in Brighton on U.S. 85

A man was arrested on multiple charges, including driving under the influence after he killed one and hospitalized several others in a vehicle crash on U.S. 85 in Brighton on Saturday night.

Erik Diaz Olivas, 20, was arrested and booked into the Weld County Jail in connection with charges of a DUI, vehicular homicide, reckless endangerment, not wearing a seatbelt and possession of alcohol under the age of 21, according to a Sunday news release from the Brighton Police Department.

Olivas was driving a Ford SUV on Weld County Road 2.5 around 12:30 a.m., Sunday and ran the stop sign at U.S. Highway 85, hitting a GMC SUV driving northbound, according to the release. Two people inside the Ford were thrown from the car; the other two ran away from the scene on foot.

One of the people thrown from the car was hospitalized with serious injuries, the other was pronounced dead on the scene, police said, noting that they may have been hit by another vehicle after the initial crash. All the occupants of the GMC were also hospitalized.

Police found the individuals of the Ford SUV shortly after arriving, according to the release.
