Denver government and services to close for New Year’s Day

After the world rings in the new year Wednesday night, Denver city officials, like many others, will be taking Thursday off.

In observance of New Year’s Day on Thursday, the Denver city government and city services will be closed to the general public.

That will include the Mayor’s Office, City Council offices, the Clerk & Recorder, the Auditor’s Office, Denver County Court, state courts and most other city agencies, the Mayor’s Office said in a Wednesday news release.

Additionally, Denver Motor Vehicle Title and Registration, Department of Transportation and Infrastructure permitting operations, Building and Zoning permitting, Department of Licensing and Consumer Protection, Denver Department of Public Health and Environment, Denver Solid Waste Management and all workforce centers will be closed for the day.

The Denver Animal Shelter will be closed Thursday, though night drop kennels will be open and animal protection officers will be able to respond to emergencies through 911. Denver’s 311 information line for non-emergency services will also be closed on Thursday, though people can submit service requests online.

IS DENVER PARKING FREE ON NEW YEAR’S DAY?

As with all recognized city holidays, Denver’s parking meters will be free on Thursday, though the city is asking drivers to keep in accordance with the posted time restrictions.

Additionally, the Regional Transportation District announced in a separate news release it will be partnering with Molson Coors to offer free rides from 7 p.m. Wednesday through 7 a.m. Thursday on all buses and light rail trains.

But while parking and transportation downtown will be free at least parts of Thursday, many city-run organizations will not be in operation.

All Denver Public Library locations will be closed on Thursday, though members can still use the library’s online resources throughout the day.

Additionally, all city recreation centers will be closed on Thursday. City golf courses, on the other hand, will be open, weather permitting.

The Department of Housing Stability will also be closed on Thursday. If cold weather shelters need to be activated, those in need of them will be able to find locations on the city’s website.
