Alleged drunk driver crashes into Aurora K-9 vehicle, dog safe

A 50-year-old man allegedly crashed into an unmarked K-9 vehicle in Aurora on New Year’s Eve while intoxicated, leading to his arrest.

Victor Balderas-Castellanos crashed into an unmarked Aurora police vehicle with a K-9 officer inside around 8 p.m. Wednesday at the intersection of Del Mar Circle and Kenton Street, the Aurora Police Department said in a news release.

The police vehicle was stopped and Balderas-Castellanos allegedly ran the stop sign, crashing into the back driver’s side of the vehicle.

Both the officer and the K-9 were unharmed in the incident.

Balderas-Castellanos was arrested on suspicion of DUI, careless driving, failing to yield, driving without a valid license and no insurance.

“This should serve as a not-so-gentle reminder that drinking and driving is never OK,” the department said. “Uber, call a friend. Actions like this will end your night and it could end someone’s or your own life.”

The National Safety Council (NSC) estimated around 48,900 nonfatal medically consulted injuries from crashes between Dec. 31 and Jan. 4 throughout the country, according recent data.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) said that New Year’s Eve is one of the worst nights for drunk driving crashes, with drunk driving deaths raising by 116% compared to regular days.
