Broncos’ Wil Lutz, with NFL’s longest active extra-point streak at 98, goes for 100 Sunday

On Monday Night Football on Nov. 13, 2023, Wil Lutz kicked a 36-yard field goal on the final play to give the Broncos a 24-22 upset at Buffalo.

That game also marked the last time Lutz missed an extra point.

After missing his only attempt that night, the Denver kicker has made 98 straight regular-season extra points. It is the longest ongoing streak in the NFL.

Lutz has a chance to hit 100 in Sunday’s regular-season finale against the Los Angeles Chargers at Empower Field at Mile High. That could set the stage for a record run early next season for Lutz, who signed a three-year, $16.1 million contract extension in November that takes him through 2028.

The Elias Sports Bureau informed The Denver Gazette on Friday that Lutz has the fourth-longest extra-point streak in the NFL since the distance was moved back in 2015, making conversions being snapped from the 15-yard line rather than the 2. That has resulted in them being 33-yard, rather than 20-yard attempts.

Former Baltimore kicker Justin Tucker has the record by making 112 in a row from 2015-18. Following him is Tyler Bass, having converted 104 straight from 2020-22 for Buffalo, and Lutz making 99 in a row from 2019-20 with New Orleans.

“I take a lot of pride in the extra point thing,’’ Lutz, who played with the Saints from 2016-22 before being traded to the Broncos in 2023, told The Denver Gazette. “These games are decided by one point every weekend. I take pride in field goals, too, don’t get me wrong. But (extra points are) something I hang my hat on. I don’t get lazy in those moments. I think extra points in this league are extremely important.”

That has been evident this season for the Broncos (13-3). In a 33-32 win over the New York Giants on Oct. 19, a game in which they scored all their points in the fourth quarter and overcame deficits of 19-0 and 26-8, opposing kicker Jude McAtamney missed two extra points.

In Denver’s 22-19 win over Kansas City on Nov. 16, the Chiefs took a 19-16 lead on a touchdown with 9:57 left in the game, but Harrison Butker missed the extra point. That kept the Broncos within a field goal, and Lutz eventually tied the game 19-19 on a 54-yard field goal with 4:10 left and won it with a 35-yard boot on the final play. Had Butker made the extra point, that might have changed the Broncos’ strategy, forcing them to go for a late touchdown.

“It changes the approach to the drive if you miss an extra point,’’ Lutz said of when a kicker misses one. “Some coaches panic. They go for two. Some coaches say, ‘Hey, we’re good. Let’s keep going until we need it.’ It changes the whole outcome of a game.’’

Lutz this season has made 38 of 38 extra points after going 46 of 46 in 2024. He has made 24 of 28 field-goal attempts this season and has scored 110 points.

In Lutz’s previous attempt to make 100 extra points in a row, he missed one in the 2020 season finale on Jan. 3, 2021, at Carolina after having converted 99 straight. Asked about his ongoing streak, he looked around at his locker at Broncos Park, where there is plenty of wood.

“So knock on wood,’’ Lutz said. “I don’t overthink it, but I take a lot of pride in extra points in this league because I think they’re important.”
