Teen dies, 3 injured in Denver shooting involving group celebrating Venezuelan president’s capture, police say
A teen boy has died and three men are injured in Denver following a shooting on Saturday night that involved a group celebrating the capture of Venezuela’s president, according to the Denver Police Department.
A Denver police spokesperson said a 16-year-old boy died in the shooting. Meanwhile, three men ages 26, 29 and 33 were transported to the hospital.
No suspect is in custody, according to police.
Denver police said they first received a report of shots fired at 10:41 p.m. near South Galena Street and East Hampden Avenue. The area is located near Aurora where Hampden turns into Havana Street.
Upon officers arriving, one victim was found in the area and transported to a hospital with unknown injuries.
At 7:46 a.m., police reported on social media platform X that three additional shooting victims were found related to the incident. Authorities learned two people, both injured, were transported to the hospital in private vehicles.
Meanwhile, the 16-year-old boy was in a private vehicle before being pronounced dead near Iliff Avenue and Havana Street, according to the police.
One of the men injured remains in critical condition Sunday, according to the Denver police spokesperson.
Police said the shooting involved a group celebrating the capture of Venezuela President Nicolás Maduro. U.S. military personnel early on Saturday arrested Maduro in Venezuela and took him to the United States.
Maduro’s capture sent shock waves throughout Venezuelan communities across the country and in the United States.
The circumstances of the shooting in southeast Denver remains under police investigation. It is unclear whether the shooting was targeted.
