Denver weather: Snow could impact Thursday evening commute

Denver weather forecasters are calling for waves of snow across the metro area on Thursday which they say could lead to a sloppy evening commute.

Meteorologists with the National Weather Service in Boulder said to expect snow to fall “mainly between 7 a.m. and 2 p.m.” on Thursday, but daytime accumulation is expected to be less than an inch out at Denver International Airport, the city’s official weather monitoring station.

Russell Danielson, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Boulder, said the Denver metro area should expect about 1 to 3 inches of snow.

“This event comes in waves, one this morning, one this afternoon and one later tonight,” Danielson told The Denver Gazette in a phone call. “None will be particularly strong, but we do expect 1 to 3 inches in the Denver metro area.”

People who plan to flock downtown for the National Western Stock Show parade at noon on Thursday should give themselves additional time, Danielson said.

“Do expect some slushy, slick roads,” Danielson said. “You may want to add a little bit of time to your travel.”

Around sunset, Danielson said the wet, slushy roads could freeze, leading to a potentially difficult evening commute.

“The Thursday evening commute could be pretty poor travel conditions,” he said. “The Friday morning commute could be pretty dicey as well.”

The chance for snow is listed at 60%, according to the weather service, with a high temperature of 37 degrees in Denver.

The weather service said to expect minor impacts in the western and southern parts of the metro area, with heavier snowfall totals to the south in the Colorado Springs area.

The Palmer Divide and Southern Foothills could see 4 to 8 inches of accumulation throughout this storm, Danielson said.
