Colorado drops in rankings of ‘best places to raise a family,’ but still hits some high notes

WalletHub recently released a study looking at the best and worst states to raise a family.

This year, Colorado ranked as the fifteenth best state to raise a family in the U.S., slightly dropping in the rankings from 2025. The Centennial State ranked eleventh last year.

To create the rankings, WalletHub evaluated all 50 states across the dimensions of family fun, health and safety, education and child care, affordability, and socio-economics, using metrics including median annual family income, housing affordability, healthcare quality, crime rates, and school performance.

Colorado ranked highly in the family fun dimension, coming in at fourth place in the category. The Centennial State also ranked fourth on the ranking of highest median family income, and fifth for lowest percentage of families in poverty.

With abundant access to outdoor activities like hiking, skiing, and much more, Colorado provides an active family lifestyle. Colorado also offers good schools, a diverse job market, and access to safe suburbs. However, affordability does remain a challenge of living in the Centennial State.

Massachusetts ranked as the best state to raise a family and New Mexico ranked as the worst state to raise a family.
