Ex-Jeffco school psychologist convicted in child sex assault case
A Jefferson County jury found a former psychologist for Jeffco Public Schools guilty of five charges, including child sexual assault.
The trial of 38-year-old James Michael Chevrier began on Jan. 5 and ended on Friday, with jurors deliberating until Monday morning, according to a news release from the First Judicial District Attorney’s Office.
Following deliberations, Chevrier was found guilty of a count of sexual assault on a child in a position of trust, possession of MDMA, possession with the intent to distribute ketamine and two counts of contributing to the delinquency of a minor.
The jury found him not guilty of two charges: soliciting for child prostitution and attempted sex assault of a child. The charges involved three minors overall.
Chevrier was arrested by the Lakewood Police Department on May 13.
Chevrier — a former high school psychologist at Green Mountain High School and Bear Creek High School — was reported to Safe2Tell, an anonymous reporting system for staff and students, at the beginning of May. The report claimed that a Green Mountain High School psychologist sexually assaulted a female student.
The defendant also worked as a staff member at Evergreen High School between 2022 and 2023 and the Cherry Creek School District between 2021 and 2022.
He was placed on administrative leave by the district at the beginning of the investigation in May, according to a letter sent to Green Mountain High School families.
Chevrier was on bond and out of the state during the case, according to the district attorney’s office. He pleaded not guilty in July, leading to the trial.
Now, he will remain in custody until his sentencing scheduled for April 2. He faces up to 12 years in prison on the most serious charge, sex assault of a child.
Chevrier’s case was one of the seven arrests or investigations regarding sexual assault on a child or related misconduct in Jefferson County Public Schools since the end of 2023 till the beginning of January.
The most recent was the arrest of 39-year-old Patricio Alejandro Illanes, a former Arvada High School teacher, last week for allegedly filming sexual exploitation videos of juveniles and distributing them on various websites.
