One dead, three arrested after break-in leads to Thornton shooting

One person is dead and three others were arrested after an attempted break-in led to an early Wednesday morning shooting in Thornton.

Police first responded to the scene of what they are calling a homicide just after 4:30 a.m. Wednesday in the 9600 block of Huron Street, according to a Wednesday morning news release from the Thornton Police Department.

Investigators believe the suspects tried to break in to a residence, resulting in a confrontation, during which shots were fired.

The initial caller reported hearing gunshots and gave a description of the suspect vehicle, according to the release. After arriving, police saw the vehicle leaving the area and began chasing it; that chase ended near the intersection of West 56th Avenue and Federal Boulevard when officers stopped the vehicle.

Investigators at the original scene found a 35-year-old man who had been shot. He was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, according to the release. The suspect vehicle had four people inside, including an adult man who was found dead with gunshot wounds.

Three other people inside the vehicle, one of whom tried to run away from the scene on foot, were taken into custody, according to the release. No officers fired their weapons during the incident.

The Colorado Department of Transportation said the southbound lanes of U.S. 287, near Interstate 76, were closed at 58th Avenue in Denver’s Berkley neighborhood in connection with police activity.

No names or detail on what led to the shooting were immediately released, though police noted in the release that the dead man’s identity will be released after he is identified by the Adams County Coroner’s Office and his next of kin has been notified.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact the Thornton Police Department’s tip line at (720) 977-5069.
