After Bo Nix injury, Broncos signing Ben DiNucci to practice squad as No. 3 QB
Quarterback Ben DiNucci is back with the Broncos.
Following Bo Nix having suffered a broken right ankle, DiNucci announced on social media Sunday that he will be rejoining the Broncos. A source confirmed that he will be signed to the practice squad.
Nix is out for the season after being hurt late in Saturday’s 33-30 overtime win over Buffalo in a divisional playoff game at Empower Field at Mile High. Backup Jarrett Stidham will start in Sunday’s AFC Championship Game against New England and Sam Ehlinger will be his backup.
DiNucci moves in as the No. 3 quarterback for practices and likely will be inactive in the AFC Championship Game at home. DiNucci was on Denver’s practice squad throughout the 2023 season before being waived in May 2024.
“It has come to my attention that a team may be in need of my services,” DiNucci wrote Sunday. “Good thing my schedule is open this week. Broncos country.”
DiNucci has been with five different NFL teams since being a seventh-round pick by Dallas in 2020 out of James Madison. He got into three games with the Cowboys as a rookie, starting one, but hasn’t appeared in a regular-season game since then.
Ellis family battle
It will be brother against brother in the AFC Championship Game.
With the Patriots having defeated the Texans 28-16 in a divisional playoff game, that assured linebacker Christian Elliss will come to Denver on Sunday. On the other side will be his brother, Broncos outside linebacker Jonah Elliss. The two are sons of Luther Elliss, a defensive tackle who played in the NFL from 1995-2004, which included playing his last season for Denver.
Before the Broncos defeated the Bills, Jonah was asked about the possibility of facing his brother’s team in the AFC Championship Game.
“If that does happen, that’s a huge (accomplishment),’’ he said then. “It would be super fun.”
No injury talk from Payton
Broncos coach Sean Payton talked openly Saturday and Sunday about the injury suffered by Nix but he was mum Sunday on the team’s other injuries.
The Broncos on Saturday lost wide receiver Pat Bryant for the game in the first quarter with a concussion, wide receiver Troy Franklin for the game in the second quarter with a hamstring injury and center Alex Forsyth went to the bench in overtime with an ankle injury.
“I’m not going to discuss any of the other injuries,’’ Payton said.
The Broncos return to practice Wednesday and will be required to put out an injury report.
Foles trolls Patriots
With the Broncos turning to Stidham, Payton on Sunday brought up backup quarterback Nick Foles having won Super Bowl LII with Philadelphia in Febuary 2018. The Eagles defeated the Patriots 41-33.
“Note for the Broncos and their fans: I know it has been an emotional 24 hours. I feel for Bo and the team, and I’m sending prayers for a strong recovery,’’ Foles wrote on social media. “A positive note going into the game versus the Patriots is that they struggle against backup QBs in championship-type games.”
