UNLV dominates cold-shooting Air Force women, running series streak to 26 in a row
Air Force went bust in Las Vegas yet again.
In falling 78-47 at UNLV, the Falcons’ women’s basketball program remained winless all time (0-27) in Vegas and have lost 26 in a row in the series.
An extended 28-8 Lady Rebels run in the first half and a scoreless snap of more than seven minutes for the Falcons in the fourth quarter were the major difference-making stretches Wednesday night.
Senior Emily Adams scored 12 points – matching a career-high – with nine rebounds as the only Air Force player in double figures. Jayda McNabb added eight and Milahnie Perry and Keelie O’Hollaren chipped in six on a dismal shooting night for the Falcons (8-11, 2-7 Mountain West). The team went 19 of 67 (28.4%) from the field and 3 of 24 (12.5%) from 3-point range while losing the turnover battle 17-16 and the rebounding tally 44-35.
“You have to do it on both ends or you’re not going to be able to compete in a conference like this,” Air Force coach Stacy McIntyre told Xtra Sports 1300 in a postgame interview.
UNLV (13-6, 8-1), extra motivated after an overtime loss to San Diego State in its most recent outing, stayed one game behind the Aztecs in the Mountain West standings as it seeks a fifth consecutive conference title.
Air Force has lost five of six, including consecutive blowout losses in locations (Wyoming, Las Vegas) where it has never won. However, as it prepares to host New Mexico at 1 p.m. Saturday in what will mark the halfway point in the conference season, there is reason for hope. Five of the next six games are against teams that entered Wednesday at or below .500 in conference play, and the Falcons have posted a better record in the second half of six of the past seven Mountain West slates.
“We all know that we’re a good team,” Adams told Xtra Sports 1300 after the game. “We all have confidence in one another. Really, that’s all you need.”
Four of the next six Air Force games will be played at Clune Arena.
