Deep freeze moves into Denver, here’s what you need to know
Frigid temperatures have settled into the Denver area on Friday, bringing with them a chance for snow over the next few days.
The National Weather Service in Boulder said to expect a high temperature of 15 degrees in Denver on Friday as an arctic airmass settles over the area. That’s about 29 degrees colder than the average high temperature for Jan. 23 in Denver.
The coldest Denver has ever seen for its high temperature on Jan. 23 is 11 degrees, set back in 1962, according to weather service data. The record low temperature for this date is -14 degrees, but that doesn’t appear to be in jeopardy, as meteorologists predict the overnight low will fall to 3 degrees.
“Some slick travel will be possible,” the weather service said. “But (the) largest impact will be cold temperatures.”
Denver is not expected to experience conditions above freezing until Monday.
Denver snow forecast
Denver is expected to see some light snow over the next few days, however only a small amount of accumulation is expected, meteorologists said.
The chance for snow in Denver on Friday is 30% and increases to 60% overnight and through Saturday, the weather service said.
Saturday night and Sunday sit at about a 20% chance of snow, according to the latest weather service projections.
The 48-hour snowfall projections from the weather service show the Denver area could get about 1 to 3 inches of accumulation, with heavier amounts falling to the west and south of the city.
The heaviest snowfall totals will be along the Interstate 70 corridor in the mountains, where 4 to 10 inches is possible, the weather service said.
How cold will it be in Denver?
Temperatures will hover between 3 and 24 degrees over the next three days, the weather service said. Here’s a breakdown of what to expect at the city’s official weather monitoring station at Denver International Airport:
Friday will see a high of 15 degrees and low of 3 degrees. Wind chills could make it feel as cold as -4 during the day and -9 at night.
Saturday, expect a high of 21 degrees and a low of 6 degrees. Wind chill values will feel as cold as -4 during the day and -2 at night.
On Sunday, the temperature will climb to a high near 24 degrees and will fall to 8 degrees overnight.
Broncos game forecast
The cold conditions are still the biggest concern during the Broncos game. The good news is the conditions will be at their best all weekend during the game, scheduled to kick off at 1 p.m. Sunday at Empower Field at Mile High.
The bad news is, the high temperature is only expected to reach 24 degrees Sunday, with a 20% chance of snow and winds gusting up to 17 mph, the weather service said.
“On the bright side, they’re going to be going out on the peak side of the warming up on Sunday,” National Weather Service Meteorologist Zach Hiris told the Denver Gazette on Thursday. “If you’ve got outdoor plans this weekend, it hasn’t been this cold in quite a while, so make sure you wear a couple extra layers to keep warm and hopefully cheer on some good sports while you’re out there.”
