A man is in critical condition following an officer-involved shooting in Wheat Ridge on Saturday morning.

An Edgewater Police Department officer was patrolling in the area of West 24th Avenue and Pierce Street around 10:30 a.m. when they saw a GMC Yukon, according to a news release from the department.

The officer attempted to contact the driver of the Yukon, but the department did not say why a traffic stop was initiated. The Yukon did not stop and sped away, the department said, and the officer did not initiate a pursuit.

Around 10 minutes later, the Yukon crashed into a Honda Pilot near West 32nd Avenue and Pierce Street in Wheat Ridge and continued on, eventually crashing into a nearby garage.

The Edgewater officer arrived and began checking on the vehicle. A male passenger then allegedly exited the vehicle and “retrieved a firearm,” according to the release. The officer and suspect exchanged fire. The suspect was hit with “at least one gunshot.”

The officer was not injured in the incident. The suspect remains in critical condition.

The female driver of the Yukon was transported to a nearby hospital with minor injuries. She will then be arrested on outstanding warrants, police said.

The driver of the Honda Pilot was also transported to the hospital with minor injuries.

The First Judicial District’s Critical Incident Response Team will investigate the incident, along with the Wheat Ridge Police Department.
