Man dies after falling through ice at Sand Creek Park
A man died in the hospital Wednesday after he fell through iced-over water at Sand Creek Park in Aurora Tuesday evening.
Around 7 p.m., a witness at the park saw an adult and three dogs walking near the frozen-over pond in the 2500 block of North Fitzsimons Parkway, according to Tuesday social media posts from Aurora Fire Rescue.
A few minutes after, the witness saw a flashlight on the ice next to a hole and one of the dogs was in distress, according to the posts. They called 911 and crews, including a South Metro Fire Rescue Dive Team, responded to the scene.
Fire crews rescued the dog and adult; the adult was taken to the hospital in critical condition, according to the posts. The three dogs are well and remain in the care of Animal Services.
Aurora Fire Rescue updated the thread just after 2:30 p.m. Wednesday to confirm the man had died from his injuries.
Crews also searched the area for anyone else who also may have fallen through the ice, but only the initial adult was found, according to the posts.
The man’s identity will be released by the Adams County Coroner’s Office in the coming days pending an autopsy and notification of family.
