Last weekend’s snowfall has already disappeared from most of Denver’s sidewalks and yards. But there’s enough at the Ruby Hill Rail Yard for it to officially open for the season this weekend.

The free terrain park, open to both skiers and snowboarders, will offer free beginner snowboard rentals between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. Friday in advance of its public opening Sunday, Denver Parks and Recreation said in a Thursday news release.

The hill will be groomed flat, and will not have any park features during Friday’s event, according to the release. The park will then be closed on Saturday for preparation ahead of Sunday’s opening.

The free rail yard, operated in partnership with Winter Park Resort, will have rentals available on Saturdays and Sundays from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. or until sundown through the remainder of the season, according to the release. The lighting is currently out of service for electrical repairs, and park officials are not advising visitors to use the hill after dark

Friday’s event will be one of a handful the park hosts throughout the ski season, which will last through March, weather permitting. The two other events listed are the Steel Lovers Rail Jam on Feb. 14 and the final Denver Learns to Ride Day on the last Saturday before the park’s closure.

Located along the South Platte River in the 1200 block of West Florida Avenue, the rail yard brings in more than 12,000 visitors every season, according to the release.

The park is open from 5 a.m. to 11 p.m. and can be accessed through the lower part of the hill.
