Denver weather: Chance of rain, snow Tuesday

Partly sunny skies will give way to a chance for afternoon rain and overnight snow in Denver on Tuesday, meteorologists predict.

The National Weather Service in Boulder said to expect partly sunny skies with a high near 52 degrees in Denver on Tuesday. That’s about 7 degrees warmer than the average high for Feb. 3 in Denver, according to weather service records.

Meteorologists said there’s a 30% chance of rain in Denver after 5 p.m., switching to a chance for snow after 8 p.m. as the temperature drops to a low of 27 degrees overnight.

“A weak weather disturbance will bring some light snow today and tonight, mainly to the mountains and Palmer Divide area,” the weather service said. “Trace to a couple of inches of accumulation is possible for the high terrain.”

Lower elevations are only expected to get a dusting, meteorologists said, but motorists should still drive with caution overnight Tuesday and Wednesday morning.

“Locally slick roads will still be possible,” the weather service said.

Forecasters said light snow showers are expected to develop across Colorado’s mountains in the late morning on Tuesday. Breezy winds will whip across the mountains and plains this afternoon accompanying the cold front, and gusts could reach 30-45 mph in some areas through the early evening.

Denver is expected to see a return to sunny skies Wednesday with a high near 51. Then, meteorologists expect the temperatures to climb back into the 60s for a high Thursday and into the weekend.
