Colorado to Italy: Colorado Springs pairs figure skaters earn points in Olympic team event
Tracking Coloradans at the Winter Olympics
– The Colorado Springs-based pairs figure skating team of Ellie Kam and Danny O’Shea placed fifth (66.59 points) in the team event, contributing six points to Team USA’s tally.
Performing to k.d. lang’s “Hallelujah” in their Olympic debut, Kam and O’Shea opened with a triple twist and landed their side-by-side triple Salchows, but Kam fell on the landing of a throw triple loop. They closed with a Level 4 Axel lasso lift, the second-highest scoring element of the event.
“We had some high points within that performance and things that we are proud of, and we had the obvious fall,” said O’Shea, the team event captain. “Ice is slippery sometimes, unfortunately. We both have to make sure that we are in that perfect zone on that given day and that given moment, so it’s disappointing whenever you make a mistake, but I think we did an amazing job of picking ourselves back up and getting back into the program and finishing with some really strong elements.”
Alysa Liu, who once called Colorado Springs her training home, placed second in the women’s short program in the team event, which Team USA leads with 25 points after the rhythm dance (Madison Chock and Evan Bates placed first for 10 points), women’s short and pairs.
– Vail’s Lindsey Vonn safely completed her first training run a week after suffering a ruptured ACL in her left knee. She placed 11th as skiers took their first turn on the course ahead of Sunday’s competition.
– Annika Belshaw of Steamboat Springs will compete early Saturday in ski jumping (normal hill). Trial rounds begin at 9:45 a.m., with those qualifying for finals scheduled to compete at 11:57 a.m.
– In his second Olympic Games, Cody Winters of Steamboat Springs competes in the snowboarding parallel giant slalom early Sunday. Qualifying will begin at 1 a.m., with finals slated for 5:30 a.m. This comes after the snowboarding big air competition at 11:30 a.m. Saturday, which will feature Ollie Martin, 17, of Vail.
