Suspect arrested in hit-and-run that killed teen

Thornton police arrested a suspect in a hit-and-run crash that killed a 14-year-old boy late Saturday night, police said Sunday afternoon.

The crash happened just before 9:45 p.m. Saturday near the intersection of Thornton Parkway and Huron Street, just west of I-25, an initial news release said.

Just before 1:30 p.m., police announced the arrest of the suspect after finding their vehicle. Suspect identification will be released “when appropriate,” a department spokesperson said.

Investigators said the teenager was riding a small motorized bike northbound on Huron Street when the suspect hit him from behind, according to the initial release. The driver was moving “at a high rate of speed” and did not stop after the crash.

The boy was taken to the hospital, where he later died from his injuries. Huron Street remained closed for several hours for an investigation.

Thornton Police Department and the Colorado Bureau of Investigation issued an alert for the car, then found it and its driver Sunday afternoon.

“Our hearts go out to the family and loved ones affected by this tragic crash,” Thornton Police Chief Jim Baird said in the initial release. “We are committed to finding the person responsible and urge anyone with information to come forward. Technology like license plate readers helps us act quickly, but we still need the public’s help to bring this investigation to a safe conclusion.”
