Colorado to Italy: Mikaela Shiffrin to ski into action, 4 in-state athletes to make Olympic debut Tuesday

Mikaela Shiffrin, the two-time Olympic gold medalist, will begin her Winter Games in the early morning hours Tuesday as she teams with newly minted downhill gold medalist Breezy Johnson in the alpine skiing women’s team combined.
Finals for the event were at 2:30 a.m.
Shiffrin, who was born in Vail and lives in Edwards, hasn’t captured an Olympic medal since 2018. She wasn’t able to medal in 2022.
– A pair of Coloradans will be in the field for men’s freestyle skiing moguls.
Charlie Mickel, a 21-year-old who grew up in Durango, and Landon Wendler, a 24-year-old from Steamboat Springs, will be making their Olympic debut in qualifying that begins at 3:15 a.m. Tuesday.
The second round of qualifying will be 2 a.m. Thursday, with finals following at 4:15 a.m. Thursday.
– Cross-country skier Lauren Jortberg, born and raised in Boulder, will make her Olympic debut in qualifying for the women’s sprint classic early Tuesday.
Finals will be held at 5:24 a.m. Tuesday.
Jortberg, 28, ran track and cross country at Boulder High School and graduated from Dartmouth.
– Steamboat Springs’ Niklas Malacinski, 22, will compete in the official training for the Nordic combined normal hill on Tuesday morning.
It will be the Olympic debut for Malacinski, a dual citizen in Finland and the United States who is fluent in Finnish, English and German.
– Jason Colby of Steamboat Springs was the top American, finishing 20th in the ski jumping men’s normal hill on Monday with 252.3 points.
Germany’s Philipp Raimund took gold with a total score of 274.1.
Colby will be back in action on Tuesday as part of the ski jumping mixed team, along with Steamboat Springs’ Annika Belshaw. The trial rounds begin at 9:30 a.m., with eight of the 12 teams qualifying for the noon finals.
– The Colorado team of Kyle Negomir (Littleton) and River Radamus (Edwards) represented the U.S. in the alpine skiing men’s team combined competition on Monday, finishing 19th.
They were 3.3 seconds off the pace of the winning tandem from Switzerland.
