Tracking Coloradans competing in the Olympic Winter Games
Vail’s Elizabeth Lemley ranked second in qualifying in the women’s freestyle skiing moguls on Tuesday morning. The 20-year-old posted a qualification score of 80.95, behind only Austria’s Jakara Anthony (81.65).
The second round of qualifying will be held early Wednesday morning, with finals slated for 6:15 a.m. Wednesday.
A pilot since the age of 17, Lemley notes in her Team USA bio a hope to “one day join the Air Force and SpaceX.”
– Mikaela Shiffrin’s fourth Olympic Games got off to a disappointing start in the team slalom combined as Breezy Johnson handed the Edwards resident a lead but Shiffrin lost time at every checkpoint and missed a medal by 0.06 seconds.
Shiffrin, the most decorated slalom racer in history, has gone seven straight Olympic races without a medal.
– A team with two Coloradans finished seventh in the ski jumping mixed team competition Tuesday.
Each team consisted of two male and two female competitors. Team USA’s lineup included Annika Belshaw and Jason Colby, both of Steamboat Springs.
Belshaw scored 108 and 111.1 points on her two jumps, while Colby came in at 126.7 and 129.3.
The Americans finished with 932.9 points, while Slovenia took gold at 1,069.2.
– Landon Wendler (Steamboat Springs) and Charlie Mickel (Durango) fell just outside of the top 10 in the first round of qualifying for men’s moguls, landing cork 7s with a tail grab to score just over 75 points.
Mickel finished 11th and Wendler 12th among the 30-skier field.
The second chance at qualifying will be at 2 a.m. Thursday.
– Boulder’s Lauren Jortberg was eliminated in the quarterfinal round of the women’s cross-country skiing women’s sprint classic.
Jortberg’s time of 4:00.81 was 5.6 seconds off the pace.
– Niklas Malacinski (Steamboat Springs) sits in 13th place after official training in the Nordic combined normal hill. His 70.9 total points top the Americans in the field.
He will be back in action early Wednesday.
– Steamboat Springs’ Madeline Schaffrick will begin her Olympics at 1 a.m. Wednesday in the women’s snowboard halfpipe qualifying.
It will be the Olympic debut for Schaffrick, 31, who got her start in snowboarding at 7 when she locked herself in her bedroom until her parents allowed her to switch from skis.
– River Radamus (Edwards) and Kyle Negomir (Littleton) will be back in action Wednesday in qualifying for the alpine skiing men’s Super-G.
The Colorado pair represented the U.S. in the alpine skiing men’s team combined competition Monday, finishing 19th.
