Man arrested after allegedly dragging Thornton officers with car
A man was arrested on suspicion of assault after he allegedly dragged two Thornton police officers with his vehicle during an otherwise routine traffic stop.
Wesley Norton, 27, was charged with assault, reckless driving and obstructing a peace officer after he dragged two police officers “several yards” during a traffic stop near West 88th Avenue and Huron Street just after 2 a.m. Feb. 3, according to a Wednesday social media post from the Thornton Police Department.
Officers first responded to the scene of what they said was an occupied suspicious vehicle that did not have license plates, according to the post. The driver of the vehicle, later identified as Norton, gave police fake identification information and was asked to get out of the car. He instead started the ignition.
Norton began driving away, dragging the two officers several yards with him, according to the post. One officer sustained minor injuries; the other suffered significant injuries and authorities believe he was run over by the vehicle and bitten by the suspect.
“This incident underscores the unpredictable and dangerous situations our officers face every day,” Thornton Police Chief Jim Baird said in the post. “Their actions, from the initial encounter through the investigation that followed, reflect their professionalism and resilience in serving this community.”
Police apprehended Norton two days later, according to the post. He was then charged by the 17th Judicial District Attorney’s Office.
