Three expected waves of snow could bring 30 inches to some Colorado peaks

Over the next two weeks, three waves of snow are expected to move through the state of Colorado, including one that started on Feb. 11.

A first wave of snow could bring anywhere from 8 to 18 inches to many Centennial State mountains in the most likely scenario, according to the National Weather Service. This round of snow should stretch through Feb. 14.

A second round of snow should start on Feb. 17, continuing into the morning of Feb. 19, per the Pivotal Weather report. This storm should drop similar totals to the first wave, also over a widespread portion of the western half of the state.

Not long after the second wave of snow concludes, a third wave of snow should stretch from Feb. 20 into Feb. 25. By the time this round of snow is wrapped up, totals of about 20 to 30 inches of snow will likely have accumulated across large swaths of Colorado’s high-elevation terrain.

This third round of snow should also bring a few inches of snow to population centers along the I-25 corridor with close to 5 inches of snow expected in Denver and close to 4 expected in Colorado Springs.

Meanwhile, about 8 inches of snow is expected in Grand Junction.

As of Feb. 11, statewide snowpack is at about 52 percent of what’s typical for the date – another record low.

While most of Colorado’s ski areas haven’t gotten much snow – if any at all – over the last 48 hours, all ski areas should get at least a few inches leading into the weekend.

The OpenSnow report indicates that Crested Butte should get the most over the next five days – about 10 inches.
