Four killed in plane crash that took place above Colorado’s oldest ski area
Four people died after a plane crashed into a Steamboat Springs mountain on the night of February 12, according to Routt County Sheriff Doug Scherar.
The crash took place on Emerald Mountain, also known as Quarry Mountain, which is above Howelsen Hill ski area and across Highway 40 from Steamboat Resort.
According to a report from Steamboat Pilot & Today, the plane hit the south-facing side of the top of the peak while it was approaching Bob Adams Airport in Steamboat Springs.
Law enforcement in the area has not released additional information about the crash at this time.
This isn’t the first fatal plane crash that’s occurred on the peak in recent years, with a Steamboat Springs doctor also killed in a crash that took place while approaching the Steamboat Springs Airport in December 2021.
Condolences go out to those impacted by these deaths.
Howelsen Hill ski area is considered the oldest continually operated ski area in Colorado, founded in 1915.
