Avalanche at the Olympics: Canada secures the top seed; Makar breaks through on power play
As expected, the United States and Canada finished the round-robin portion of the tournament undefeated. Only one can take the top seed, and it’ll be our friends north of the border.
Switzerland defeats Czechia 4-3 in overtime
Martin Necas continued his strong tournament, picking up a point on all three Czechia goals, including his tying goal late in regulation. However, Czechia’s somewhat disappointing tournament continues, as the Swiss, playing without one of their top forwards, took them down in overtime. That means Czechia will have to win its way to the quarterfinals, as it will have to go through the qualification playoff on Tuesday.
Canada defeats France 10-2
Canada really laid it on in the second half, wearing down France and scoring six goals in the final 30 minutes.
Cale Makar, who has just two power-play goals with the Avalanche this season, scored on the man advantage similar to what we’ve seen him do in prior years. He took the time and space given to him by the penalty kill and used France defenders as a screen to beat Julian Junca. It’s something Avalanche fans haven’t seen enough of this season.
Nathan MacKinnon finished with an assist but took a high hit late. He seemed alright, so there shouldn’t be any concern regarding his availability in the quarterfinals. Devon Toews also chipped in, scoring his first goal of the tournament and finishing plus-4.
Denmark defeats Latvia 4-2
United States defeats Germany 5-1
Because the United States was unable to match the goal differential Canada put up in the round robin, they finished as the second seed, meaning they will face the winner of the Sweden/Latvia game in the quarterfinals Wednesday. If there’s a positive for the United States to take from this game, it’s that Auston Matthews really came alive, picking up three points on the evening.
Brock Nelson played a little less than 13 minutes in the game and finished with no points.
The qualification round for the quarterfinals will take place Tuesday.
