Mass-casualty pile-up involving “at least 30 vehicles” shuts down I-25

Those traveling around Colorado on February 17 should be aware that a major closure is underway on I-25 after a wreck involving at least 30 vehicles.

The wreck, involving multiple semis and passengers vehicles, took place a few miles south of Pueblo on I-25 at mile marker 92 at about 10:02 a.m. An initial report from state troopers at the scene noted four confirmed fatalities and multiple reports of injuries. At this time, it is unknown how many people were involved and to what extent people were injured [UPDATE: A report from The Gazette indicates that there were 29 injuries reported].

At last report, Northbound I-25 was closed at mile marker 93 and Southbound I-25 was closed at mile marker 94.

Per a report from the Pueblo Chieftain, dust and strong winds in the area may have created “near brownout” conditions. This may have been a contributing factor in the pile-up. The report from Colorado State Patrol noted that low visibility was present in the area, advising travelers to delay hitting the road until conditions improve.

Those who must travel in the area have been advised to avoid I-25 and to proceed with extreme caution, reducing speed.

Updates related to the closure of I-25 can be found on the CoTrip.org map.
