Man allegedly broke ski pole over woman after she struck his off-leash dog in Colorado

An altercation between skiers left a man with a summons for assault in Summit County in recent days.

According to a report from the Summit County Sheriff’s Office, the situation unfolded in unincorporated Breckenridge, involving a woman who was out skiing with her on-leash dog and a skiing couple whose dog was off-leash.

A report on the matter indicates that when the woman came across the couple, the couple’s dog appeared to be approaching her and her on-leash dog in an unfriendly manner. The woman reportedly then used her ski pole in attempt to keep the dogs apart, with a witness later stating that the woman struck the couple’s dog.

A male who was with the off-leash dog then allegedly struck the woman with one of his ski poles, hitting her with enough force to break it. He also commanded the woman not to hit his dog again.

A deputy responded and was able to interview all three parties, as well as a witness. The man claimed that his dog approached the woman and her dog in a friendly manner and that she then hit it with a ski pole in response. While he admitted to getting angry about the situation, he said he didn’t strike the woman, but instead broke his ski pole when he slipped and fell.

The witness’ statement contradicted what the man said, with the witness claiming to have seen the woman strike the dog followed by the man striking the woman.

The woman who was allegedly hit with the ski pole denied needing medical attention and the man who allegedly struck her was issued a summons for assault. According to the Summit County Sheriff’s Office, “the matter will ultimately be settled in court.”

All suspects are to be considered innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
