Joe Scott out as Air Force men’s basketball coach in mutual parting of ways

Joe Scott is no longer the head coach of the Air Force men’s basketball team.

More than a month after the longtime coach, in his second stint with the program, was suspended, the team announced a “mutual parting of ways” with Scott on Friday.

Scott’s first tenure brought Air Force’s lone conference championship in basketball, as the team went 12-2 in 2003-04 before Scott departed for his alma mater, Princeton.

He was rehired in March 2020.

“Coach Scott’s passion for the game of basketball has long been evident in his competitive and direct coaching style,” Air Force athletic director Nathan Pine said in a statement Friday. “It was this coaching style that guided Air Force Basketball to some of the program’s most memorable achievements during his initial tenure at the Air Force Academy. This is a different day, and now is the right time for a new voice and a new approach to drive the culture and success of the men’s basketball program, aligned with the Air Force Academy’s mission of forging leaders of character developed to lead in our Air Force and Space Force. We thank Coach Scott for his 10 years of service to the Academy and wish him and his family well.”

Friday’s announcement comes after an investigation into Scott’s treatment of cadet-athletes that resulted in his indefinite suspension. Assistant coach Jon Jordan was named interim head coach Jan. 17.

This was Scott’s sixth year of his second stint as Air Force head coach after also coaching from 2001 to 2004.

“I thank Nate Pine for his leadership,” said Scott, who led Princeton and Denver and served as an assistant at Holy Cross and Georgia between his stints with the Falcons. “The Air Force Academy gave me my first head coaching opportunity and I am forever grateful. We will always be fans of Air Force Basketball.”

Scott’s Air Force teams went 46-121 in his return, including a 14-84 mark in conference games.

The Falcons (3-23, 0-15) have lost all nine games since Scott’s suspension, all by at least 15 points. In a loss last week at Fresno State, the Falcons received 56 of their 62 points from freshmen.

“I think whoever it is that gets this program is going to have a good assortment of players and a program and team that’s ready to take another step,” Jordan said.
