Colorado promoting Chris Marve to defensive coordinator after Robert Livingston’s departure to Broncos
With a week until the start of spring practices, Colorado has been dealt a big change to its coaching staff.
The Buffaloes are losing defensive coordinator Robert Livingston to the Denver Broncos, with whom he will become the team’s defensive pass game coordinator and secondary coach.
The move was first reported by Thee Pregame Show’s Chris Neely, a media partner of Deion Sanders at CU.
The Buffs will replace Livingston with an internal hire. Linebackers coach Chris Marve, who was hired in December, will take over the defense. He was previously the defensive coordinator for three seasons at Virginia Tech.
The former Vanderbilt linebacker got his start in coaching at his alma mater, working his way up to inside linebackers coach for the Commodores from 2016-18 before making stops at Mississippi State and Florida State ahead of his first coordinator job with the Hokies.
Livingston leaves Boulder after two seasons. He orchestrated a defensive turnaround in 2024 that fueled CU’s nine-win season and helped two-way star Travis Hunter earn the Chuck Bednarik Award as the nation’s top defensive player.
Livingston will reunite with Broncos defensive coordinator Vance Joseph, with whom he worked with the Cincinnati Bengals in 2014-15.
The Buffs saw a sharp decline in 2025, however, as they ranked last in the Big 12 in yards allowed per game and 13th out of 16 teams in points per game.
Marve essentially will start from scratch this spring as Deion Sanders had to rebuild the roster in January following a season with a senior-led defense that lost to the transfer portal the few key returners it was set to return.
