Douglas County wildfire controlled, fourth in Denver area this week
A brush fire in Douglas County was controlled Friday morning before damaging any structures, South Metro Fire Rescue said.
The fire, the fourth new blaze of the week in the Denver area, grew to about 8 acres in the 7800 block of Merryvale Trail, southeast of Parker, before crews were able to control it, South Metro said on social media.
Authorities first received a 911 call about the fire just before 10:30 a.m. Friday, a spokesperson for the department said. The fire threatened several homes and outbuildings.
Investigators currently do not know what could have started the fire, the spokesperson added, but the blaze moved quickly in the dry conditions.
Responders initially ordered evacuations on Vinegarroon Road and Sonoma Trail in the surrounding area, but those orders, as well as requests for air support, were canceled as crews gained control of the fire.
The fire is the fourth new one to spark this week in the Denver area. On Tuesday, another fire in Douglas County consumed about 500 acres of grassland before it was contained with the help of air support.
On Wednesday, a fire in Thornton sparked just east of Pinnacle High School and raced through 10 acres of a grassy field before it was contained, thrusting a dark plume of black smoke above the Denver area in the process. The next day, another fire in Jefferson County spilled out of a home and into the surrounding vegetation before crews quickly contained it.
Friday also marked yet another day with the Front Range under a Red Flag Warning due to extreme fire conditions, heightened dryness and wind gusts throughout the region.
