ICE agent injured after suspect hits vehicle in Lakewood
At least one U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent was injured after a hit-and-run crash in Lakewood on Saturday morning.
The Lakewood Police Department was called to the 200 block of South Ingalls Street, just west of Sheridan Boulevard, around 10 a.m. Saturday, according to a news release from the department.
Someone reported that there was a hit-and-run involving ICE agents.
ICE agents reported that, while attempting to apprehend a suspect, “the suspect rammed two ICE vehicles with his car, injuring at least one ICE agent,” the police department said.
The suspect then allegedly fled the vehicle and entered a nearby apartment.
When more ICE agents arrived and a warrant was granted to enter the apartment, the police department left the scene.
The Denver Gazette’s news partner, 9NEWS, flew a news helicopter over the scene around 4 p.m. and saw federal law enforcement agents with a shield going to a second floor apartment.
A few minutes later, the federal agents were seen walking a man in handcuffs to an unmarked vehicle and driving away.
The Denver Gazette reached out to the Department of Homeland Security to ask about the suspect and why the department was searching for him, as well as the injuries to the agents, but did not hear back at press time.
The Lakewood Police said it was not a part of the ICE operation.
“Lakewood Police responded to the scene because of the concern for community safety and a potential violation of local law. Lakewood Police set up a perimeter on the scene and did not engage with the suspect or the ICE operation,” the department said.
The incident came less than a week after the Lakewood City Council made a public declaration about de-escalation regarding ICE operations in the city.
The declaration also said the council will communicate with residents and share accurate information regarding potential ICE activity.
