Widespread snow is expected to hit Colorado over the next few days, with Friday likely to be when much of that snow falls. While this will mean a Saturday powder day for skiers and snowboarders, it could also come with some travel concerns.

Per mapping from the National Weather Service, many mountains around the state will be getting snow in the range of 8 to 12 inches in the most likely “80 percent-chance” scenario, with a few peaks in central Colorado expected to get a bit more.

When it comes to travel, one particularly problematic area could be I-70, with the stretch through the Eisenhower-Johnson tunnel area likely to get about a foot of snow.

The high-end snowfall scenario – with a 10 percent chance of coming to fruition – would mean that totals in the range of 8 to 12 inches extend throughout mountain valleys, with many peaks ending up with about 12 to 18 inches of snow. Some peaks could get a little more than that, as well.

According to the OpenSnow five-day report, western Colorado’s Powderhorn Mountain Resort should get the most snow over the next five days at about 14 inches. That said, most major ski areas should get at least 9 inches of snow (see a full resort-by-resort breakdown here).

The USDA reports that Colorado’s statewide snowpack set another record low on March 5, at about 61 percent of the norm for the date. The current snow-water equivalent at the statewide level is 8.1 inches with the previous record-low snow-water equivalent for March 5 being 8.4 inches. The norm for the date is 13.2 inches.
