Gabriel Landeskog out week to week as Avalanche injuries mount

It can’t all be good news this week, apparently.

On the day the Avalanche welcomed Nazem Kadri back to their lineup, news came out that they’ll be without captain Gabriel Landeskog for a little while. The 33-year-old Swede is week-to-week with what the team is calling a lower-body injury.

Landeskog was hit in an uncomfortable spot by a Cale Makar shot during the second period of Friday’s 5-4 win over the Dallas Stars. He left the game briefly before returning to finish the game, picking up an assist in nearly 23 minutes of ice time.

Although Bednar didn’t give too much detail after the game on the injury, he did seemingly confirm that it’s not related to his knee, but rather the shot that hit him in Dallas.

“Not a comfortable (injury),” Bednar said. “That’s the time frame the doctors gave us.”

In 47 games this season, Landeskog has picked up nine goals and 29 points. More importantly, the team looks completely different with him in the lineup. When Landeskog plays, the Avalanche are 36-4-7. In the 14 games he has missed, they’re just 6-6-2.

This injury now puts the Avalanche down multiple top-six wingers, as Artturi Lehkonen is also considered week-to-week with an upper-body injury. Coach Jared Bednar said they expect Lehkonen to return to play before the end of the regular season. In their absence, Kadri will move to the wing on a line with Brock Nelson to play in the top six, while Valeri Nichushkin will move up to the top line.
