LB Greenlaw to be post-June 1 cut, giving Broncos about $2M more cap room this year
The Broncos plan to designate linebacker Dre Greenlaw as a post-June 1 cut, giving them about $2 million additional salary-cap room this year after that date.
However, that means they will have about $2 million less cap room in 2027.
A source informed The Denver Gazette of the move Tuesday, which is why Greenlaw was not officially released Tuesday. The Broncos, who notified Greenlaw of his impending departure Monday, plan to release him when the NFL new league year starts Wednesday to take advantage of the rule that allows a team to spread dead money on the salary cap over two years.
If the Broncos released Greenlaw without a June 1 designation, they would incur $6.023 million of cap savings this year and $4.33 million of dead money. By giving him a June 1 designation, they get a cap savings of $8.19 million this year with $2.167 million of dead money. However, the Broncos will have $2.167 million more dead money from Greenlaw on the cap in 2027.
While the extra $2.167 million of cap room won’t be available until June 1, that might not be a big deal since the Broncos might not have all their draft picks signed by then. And they would have extra money after then for the signing of additional players.
The last time the Broncos used a post-June 1 designation was when they released quarterback Russell Wilson in 2024. They took a dead cap hit of $53 million in 2024 and one of $32 million in 2025.
The Broncos have about $20 million of cap room available in 2026.
Draft order set
The NFL awarded the Broncos two compensatory picks Monday and on Tuesday the NFL draft order was officially announced for the April 23-25 event in Pittsburgh.
The Broncos have nine total picks, ranging from No. 30 in the first round to Nos. 256 and 257 in the seventh round, the comp picks they got Monday. No. 257 is the last pick of the draft, putting the Broncos in line to select “Mr. Irrelevant” for the second time in team history. They took quarterback Chad Kelly at No. 253 in 2017.
Here’s a look at all of Denver’s picks:
First round: No. 30 overall.
Second round: No. 62.
Third round: No. 94, No. 108 (trade with New Orleans last August for wide receiver Devaughn Vele).
Fourth round: No. 130.
Fifth round: No. 170.
Sixth round: None.
Seventh round: No. 246, No. 256 (comp), No. 257 (comp).
Event with Payton as coach moved to L.A.
Sean Payton no longer will need to travel to Saudi Arabia.
The Broncos coach had been scheduled to coach a team there this month in the Fanatics Flag Football Classic featuring legendary quarterback Tom Brady. However, due to the war, that game has been moved to BMO Stadium on March 21 in Los Angeles.
The event will feature three 12-player teams made up of current and former NFL players. Payton will coach Founders FCC, which will include captains Brady and Philadelphia quarterback Jalen Hurts.
