Kickin’ It with Kiz: Here’s the no-brainer first-round pick for the Broncos in NFL draft
The Broncos signed no big name in free agency? This is garbage. General manager George Paton not getting an extension means he decided not to give a flip? And is coach Sean Payton really so full of himself that he figured nothing about this team needed to improve or change?
– L.F., Denver
Kiz: OK, perhaps we have a clearer understanding why they’re called Broncomaniacs? Would the addition of a big-name talent off another NFL roster have been nice? Yes. But should it be the cause of pitchfork-and-torches anger? Heck no. I’m turning my attention to the NFL draft. With their first-round pick, the Broncos should take linebacker Jacob Rodriguez of Texas Tech. If he’s on the board, it’s a no-brainer.
Meanwhile, the New England Patriots got much better through free agency.
– Alfonso, taking stock
Kiz: While receiver Romeo Doubs will be a nice target for Patriots quarterback Drake Maye, would you really have wanted Denver to add Doubs at a price tag of $20 million per year? That’s lunacy. The Chiefs, however, made noteworthy moves in free agency by acquiring running back Kenneth Walker III and defensive tackle Khyiris Tonga. Broncos Country is going to hate hearing this, but … If quarterback Patrick Mahomes can return at full capacity from knee surgery by late September, Kansas City should be considered the favorite to win the AFC West.
The Packers and Ravens were long considered the NFL’s best-run franchises because they drafted and developed players, rarely signing free agents. I’m good with what the Broncos have done by retaining their own proven players.

Kiz: The big “if” of the Broncos’ moves is the health of running back J.K. Dobbins. Without Dobbins, Denver lacked the offensive firepower to win the Super Bowl even before Bo Nix broke his ankle in the playoffs.
The Nuggets have a championship window over the next three to four years. The time is now to move on from coach David Adelman if the Nuggets get bounced from the playoffs in the first or second round.
– T.B., man of action
Kiz: I like David Adelman. I think he deserves the chance to grow as a first-time head coach. I’m not advocating his dismissal. On the other hand, those who ever suggested Adelman would be an upgrade over Michael Malone are stark-raving mad. I also would’ve hired an experienced NBA coach to maximize what remains of Nikola Jokic’s prime.
Except for captain Gabe Landeskog, this Avalanche team just doesn’t play smart enough hockey to beat Dallas in the playoffs. The Avs commit too many turnovers, bad penalties and mental errors. It will be Dallas in six games.
– Rob, calling his shot
Kiz: While general manager Chris MacFarland’s savvy moves at the trade deadline make the Avs this year’s favorite to hoist the Stanley Cup, the NHL playoffs are so fraught with peril that it would be optimistic to peg their chances of winning the championship at 20%. If my math is correct, that would mean, as good as these Avs are, there’s an 80% chance they don’t win it all.
And today’s parting shot might be the truest words ever spoken.
Nobody cares what you think, Kiz.
