Snow blankets region as forecasters warn of heat ahead

A snowstorm dropped 10 inches of snow in parts of the region Sunday, while forecasters warn of potentially record-breaking heat next weekend.

Snowfall ranged from 0.9 inches at the Denver International Airport to 10 inches outside of Larkspur, according to the National Weather Service.

Cities north of Denver received between 1 and 2 inches of snow, central Denver reported 2 to 3.5 inches and areas south of Denver received between 2.5 and 5 inches of snow, according to Russell Danielson, a forecaster with the NWS.

The Palmer Divide received anywhere from 4 to 10 inches of snow.

Despite Sunday’s storm, this winter has seen a significant decrease in snowfall totals, according to Danielson. Since November, the DIA has recorded 22.8 inches of snowfall through March 15.

“A normal year through March 15 has 40.5 inches,” Danielson said.

The NWS forecasts a potentially record-breaking high of 86 degrees in parts of Denver Friday. The highest recorded temperature in March was 84 degrees in 1971.

“It takes a few days to get unusually warm, but we are forecasting record-breaking high temperatures by the end of this week,” Danielson said.
