Longmont police officer fatally shoots ‘suicidal’ woman

A Longmont police officer fatally shot a woman Thursday afternoon after she allegedly brandished a firearm.

Longmont police responded at about 4:15 p.m. to the 1500 block of East Third Avenue after receiving a report of a suicidal woman, according to a Longmont Public Safety Department Facebook post. After speaking with the woman, the post said, the woman discharged a firearm inside her garage as officers were leaving the scene, leading them to attempt to re-establish contact with her.

Police tried negotiating with her to exit the garage unarmed, and the department also said there was a large police presence at the home at about 5:15 p.m.

After some time, the woman emerged from the garage while brandishing a firearm, leading an officer to shoot her. She was taken to a local hospital, where she was later pronounced dead.

The officer who shot the woman has been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of an external investigation per department policy. The investigation will be conducted by the 20th Judicial District’s critical incident team and the Boulder County critical incident team.

Neither the officer nor the woman who was killed were identified by police.

The Boulder County Coroner will make identification pending notification of family and an autopsy.

Police have asked anyone who witnessed the shooting to call the Boulder County Sheriff’s Office tip line at (303) 441-3674 and reference Longmont Police Report #26-3498.
