Some containment gained on 7,385-acre fire south of Colorado Springs, highway still closed

The 24 Fire that’s burning between Colorado Springs and Penrose has been partially contained, per an update from Fort Carson that was shared by the Fremont County Sheriff’s Office on the morning of March 24.

As of 8 p.m. on Monday night, the fire remained at the 7,385 acres that was reported earlier in the day, now with 24 percent containment.

“Good progress has been made along Highway 115 with crews conducting mop up, tree removal and clean up,” reads the press release on the matter. “Crews along the north, east, and south control lines completed interior firing operations and made good progress on mop up along the road.”

Also noteworthy is that the mandatory evacuation order for those near the blaze was lifted on Monday with residents allowed to return to their homes. Highway 115 remains closed in the area of the fire, with initial reports indicating that the closure could be in place until Friday.

While the Fremont County Sheriff’s Office noted that their agency has not been informed of the fire’s cause, at last report, it was initially stated that it was believed to have started from the highway, moving into rugged land along Highway 115 that’s owned by Fort Carson.
