A homicide suspect wanted in Arapahoe County for a fentanyl death was captured in Colombia, sheriff’s officials announced Tuesday.

The suspect, Max Arsenault, 33, was on the run from Jan. 17 to March 4, when Colombian Migration authorities arrested him with help from the FBI and U.S. Marshals Service, according to a news release from the Arapahoe County Sheriff’s Office on Tuesday.

Arsenault’s arrest followed a two-month international investigation led by the FBI Rocky Mountain Safe Streets Task Force and an ACSO officer, the release said.

In July 2024, ACSO deputies made their first homicide arrests, of Arsenault and Julia Weishaar, connected to the fentanyl overdose death of Nicholas Dorotik in Arapahoe County.

The two were charged with 11 felony counts, including manslaughter and distribution of fentanyl resulting in death, the release said.

Dorotik died in May 2023 when deputies responded to a medical call and found him dead at the scene. He had about three times the lethal amount of fentanyl in his system and his cause of death was determined to be a mixed drug overdose with fentanyl and methamphetamine.

Arsenault’s trial was scheduled to begin Jan. 20, but he was released on bond and fled the country three days before his trial began, according to the release.

Weishaar is currently in prison, after being sentenced to 10 years in the Colorado Department of Corrections.

Arapahoe County Sheriff Tyler Brown thanked the FBI Rocky Mountain Safe Streets Task Force and the ACSO deputy assigned to the team for bringing Arsenault to justice.

“This arrest sends a clear message: our agency is committed to holding those accountable in fentanyl-related deaths to protect our community from this deadly substance,” Brown said in the release. “To hold individuals accountable, we will use any legal technologies and advantages to bring you into custody.”
