Colorado Mesa women’s basketball falls to Indiana (Pa.) in NCAA DII Final Four

An epic season for the Colorado Mesa women’s basketball team has come to an end.

In a season full of the Mavericks breaking records, Colorado Mesa came up short on Thursday in a 75-70 loss to Indiana (Pa.) in Pittsburgh at the NCAA Division II Final Four.

It was the first trip to the national semifinals in Colorado Mesa program history. The Mavericks finished the season with a 37-2 record and came into Thursday’s game with a 34-game winning streak.

All-American Olivia Reed Thyne led the Mavericks once again. The Windsor native finished the game with 34 points and 14 rebounds. She finishes her career as the third-highest women’s basketball scorer in Colorado history and the all-time leading scorer in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference history. She is the RMAC’s all-time leading rebounder.

The Mavericks fell behind 21-19 after the first quarter and were never able to recover despite outscoring Indiana (Pa.) in the second half. They struggled from behind the arc, shooting just 20% in the loss.

Mason Rowland contributed 27 points on Thursday, but she was the only other Maverick in double figures. Colorado Mesa shot 40% while the Crimson Hawks were at 49%.

Nyshae’ Weaver led the Crimson Hawks with 21 points while Ellie Wilkerson contributed 20.

It was a record-breaking season for the Mavericks. They broke the school record for wins at 37 and became the first team since 1995-96 to finish RMAC play undefeated at 20-0. Colorado Mesa was the first RMAC team to make the Final Four since Fort Lewis in 2010.
