Indefinite closure underway along popular Boulder Canyon trail after hole forms

A hole that has formed under a popular Boulder County trail has resulted in an extended closure impacting hikers and cyclists.

According to Boulder County Parks and Open Space (BCPOS), a hole has formed under the abutment of a bridge that’s located a quarter-mile east (downhill) of Fourmile Canyon Drive on Boulder Canyon Trail. As a result, a section of the trail has been closed, making this trail no longer a thru-route option. There is no detour.

At this time, BCPOS staff are looking into options to repair the damage, though the project is complex due to the trail’s proximity with Boulder Creek and Boulder Canyon Drive, potential permitting that will be required, and how the City of Boulder’s water utility infrastructure runs beneath the bridge that’s involved.

No timeline for the reopening of the section of trail has been released with the bridge set to remain closed until a repair plan is finalized. BCPOS reports that their agency is working to find a solution as fast as possible.

The public has been asked to respect the closure of the bridge and not to travel across it due to a safety risk.
