Star Colorado freshman Isaiah Johnson reportedly entering transfer portal
Tad Boyle is once again experiencing the harsh side of the transfer portal era.
After a promising freshman season, Colorado’s leading scorer, Isaiah Johnson is leaving Boulder and entering the transfer portal, per multiple reports.
The announcement comes as the Buffaloes are getting ready to play in the College Basketball Crown next week in Las Vegas. CU plays Oklahoma in the quarterfinals of the postseason tournament on Wednesday (6 p.m., FS1).
Johnson broke the Buffs’ freshman scoring record previously held by longtime NBA veteran Alec Burks, with the Los Angeles native pouring in 540 points over 32 games (16.9 per game).
He trailed only Barrington Hargress in assists and averaged one steal per game.
Johnson was the headliner of a large freshman class that included Denver native Josiah Sanders, Jalin Holland, Alon Michaeli, Ian Inman and Tacko Ifaola as players who all made an impact during their first season at CU.
Johnson is the son of longtime NBA trainer Chris Johnson, who has worked with stars such as LeBron James, Aaron Gordon, Tyrese Maxey and many others. Dwyane Wade is also Johnson’s godfather.
The Buffs could have returned all but one player from this year’s squad that outperformed preseason expectations by winning seven games in the Big 12 (more than double the previous year’s total) and finishing 11th in the conference standings (they were picked to finish 15th before the year).
Now, Boyle’s program could see more exits, and the veteran coach could be forced to start anew with multiple transfer portal additions CU did not expect to have to make.
