District Attorney Brian Mason announced Monday an 80-year prison sentence for Ricky Roybal-Smith, who pleaded guilty to fatally stabbing two men more than 100 times.

Roybal-Smith pled guilty Monday to murdering 27-year-old Jesse Shafer and 61-year-old Scott Davenport in two separate attacks on East Colfax Avenue in Aurora on June 29, 2025.

Adams County District Court Judge Brett Martin sentenced him to two consecutive terms of 40 years in the Colorado Department of Corrections, according to an 18th Judicial District Attorney’s Office news release Monday.

Roybal-Smith was also charged with murder in connection with the death of his cellmate, 34-year-old Vincent Chacon, at the Denver Sheriff’s Department Jail — where he was booked after being arrested for a hit-and-run that same night.

The double homicide came to light just before 2 a.m. on June 29, when a driver saw Shafer collapse in the middle of an alleyway and called 911. Officers found Shafer unresponsive with 15 stab wounds and he was pronounced dead on the scene.

While officers investigated Shafer’s death, a second 911 call came in about a man dead with 90 stab wounds, the release said.

The two stabbings happened within a half mile and one hour of each other, according to previous Denver Gazette reporting.

Roybal-Smith is no stranger to the criminal justice system. Court records show he was sentenced to 12 years in prison for a vehicular assault-DUI charge in 2016 before being arrested again for threatening a family with a knife at an Englewood Walmart in 2022.

Mason called the murders “horrific” and “senseless” in the news release about Roybal-Smith’s sentencing.

“Jesse Shafer and Scott Davenport were killed in acts of extreme violence carried out within a short time of each other,” Mason said in the release. “Today’s sentence holds the defendant accountable for the lives he took and for the fear and trauma he inflicted on our community.”
