Snow to hit Colorado high country with winter weather advisory and dangerous travel conditions possible

The National Weather Service has issued various winter weather advisories for Colorado’s mountainous region ahead of heavy snow that’s expected to hit between Wednesday and Thursday of this week. The agency warns of dangerous travel conditions and possible impacts during Wednesday morning and evening commutes.

According to the mapping of the most likely ‘expected’ snowfall scenario, which comes with an 80 percent chance, peaks across most mountain ranges should get between eight and 18 inches of snow with potential for totals in the range of 18 to 24 inches on peaks near Aspen, those south of Wolf Creek Pass, and those of the Park Range near Steamboat Springs. Wolf Creek Pass will likely get around 17 inches prior to Friday morning, with I-70 in the area of the Eisenhower-Johnson Memorial Tunnel complex expected to get about nine.

High-end snowfall mapping shows that potential totals could be much greater, with this scenario having a 10 percent chance of coming to fruition. In this scenario, many peaks get totals above two feet by Friday morning, with the potential for more than 36 inches of snow on mountains that get hit the hardest. This scenario would also mean an impactful 27 inches on Wolf Creek Pass, too.

In both scenarios, significant snow isn’t expected along the I-25 corridor.

As of March 31, statewide snowpack is at 22 percent of the norm for the date, on par with what’s typically present by May 30.
