Greeley police fatally shoot knife-wielding man

Greeley police officers fatally shot a 20-year-old man after he allegedly killed his brother and charged at responding officers.

The department responded at about 9:20 a.m. on Saturday to reports of a man running with a knife and found the man running east on 20th Street from 59 Avenue, the department said in a news release. Officers attempted to block the man’s path, but he pulled out a knife and charged at officers.

Greeley Police Department officers discharged their weapons, striking the man, police said. During the encounter, an officer was injured. The release did not say how the officer was injured, but said he was later released from the hospital with minor injuries.

Police attempted to perform life-saving measures, but the man was pronounced dead after being transported to a local hospital.

Investigators determined that prior to the confrontation with officers, the man had been at his grandparents’ home in the 5400 block of 24th Street, where he is believed to have stabbed his 22-year-old brother to death.

Police did not identify the man or his brother.

Greeley police said the officers involved in the shooting have been put on paid leave following the incident. The shooting is under investigation by the 19th Judicial Critical Incident Response team.

Anyone with information on the incident is asked to contact the Weld County Sheriff’s Office lead detective Elijah Howard at (970) 400-2854 or via email at [email protected].
