Annexing New Mexico, ziplines at the Capitol: April Fools’ in Colorado

Don’t believe everything you see online. Especially on April 1.

Colorado officials were having some fun Wednesday with announcements of the wacky and unusual variety. Gov. Jared Polis announced plans to annex the northern part of New Mexico to stop “Texas aggression,” while Denver Parks and Recreation announced plans to build a zipline across Civic Center Park, connecting the state Capitol to the City and County Building.

Some may have been taken aback by the announcements. But those who took a moment to check the date (or read to the end of the news release) will likely know it’s a joke.

Hopefully.

“The Santa Fe area will be a great addition to Colorado,” Polis wrote on X. “This isn’t like Trump trying to take over Greenland; it’s totally different and definitely legal.”

Polis’ post shows a graphic of the original borders of the Republic of Texas, which included parts of modern-day Colorado and New Mexico, with the top half covered with the Colorado state flag.

Denver Parks and Recreation said the department noticed a gap in “speedy connectivity” across Civic Center Park during a routine site visit. While a bridge was considered, a news release said, a recent survey showed 90% support for a zipline connecting the Capitol to the City and County Building in as few as 23 seconds.

The zipline will be free to ride, the release said, as long as “riders” were at least 4 feet tall.

Denver International Airport also announced that a rock climbing wall will open on Wednesday inside the Jeppesen Terminal, allowing travelers to move between Level 5 and 6 of the terminal in a “Mile High” way.

“We’re bringing the outdoors inside,” airport CEO Phil Washington said in a news release and a faux press conference. “Inspired by Colorado’s love for outdoor recreation and its reputation as one of the healthiest states in the U.S., we’re excited to provide a new and fun way for Coloradans to stay true to their active lifestyles as they move through our Terminal.”

The climbing wall will have trained “vertical transportation specialists” on site to assist travelers with bags as they climb the wall.

The Denver Botanic Gardens also announced that alien DNA was discovered inside a mushroom at the garden using an X-ray machine. An Instagram post documenting the supposed discovery ends with a jumpscare of a xenomorph from the “Alien” horror franchise.

Other April Fools’ gags include the Thornton Police Department announcing that officers will begin wearing special-made Crocs shoes with flashing emergency lights, a flashlight and “sport-mode” for foot pursuits, while the City of Colorado Springs announced that a lazy river would be added to Garden of the Gods park to allow for inner-tubing.
